Polio is a terrible disease. It can paralyze children for their entire life. That's why one of the Gates Foundation's top priorities is to eradicate it for good. Along with UNICEF, the US CDC, the WHO, Gavi, and Rotary International, we fund vaccines, support health workers, and help countries prevent and stop outbreaks. But outbreaks are still happening in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and some countries in Africa where military conflict and weak health systems make it hard to get vaccines to all the children who need them. Every time we see a new case, we need to figure out where the virus came from.
