The building materials that we are currently using are responsible for a very high CO2 emission, and the question for us is how can we change that? My name is Christina Scheffler. I'm a professor for polymers and construction at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at TU Dresden, and I am head of the Department Fiber Engineering at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research. My research is about fibers and polymers and how they can help to make new building materials stronger, lighter, more durable, and more sustainable. Because we have to think beyond steel and concrete as traditional building materials. If we bring fibers into concrete, then we have very carefully to design the interface between both materials, and also the fibers need to be multifunctional, so they need to provide strength, they need to improve impact resistance, or even provide sensing capabilities.
