He walks up to it with a female assistant. After stepping off one side of the fan's platform, he closes it. Then he and his assistant hold onto a frame placed behind the fan's platform with a lit light on it. David Copperfield picks up the second part of the frame and places it in front, causing his shadow to appear, to walk into the fan, and turn into smoke.
